Uzbekistan and ADB Discuss Transition to Green Economy
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) – A meeting with representatives of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was held at the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan to discuss the transition to a green economy and the greenhouse gas emissions trading system.The meeting reviewed reforms and projects being implemented as part of the transition to a green economy. Particular attention was paid to the introduction of a greenhouse gas trading system on a voluntary market, a measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) system, as well as a system of “green energy certificates” and initiatives to develop “green energy”. Representatives of the ministry also presented a taxonomy system and ongoing cooperation with international organizations and countries.
During the discussions, proposals were made regarding the creation of a national emissions trading system (ETS) and the introduction of a carbon tax. These proposals will be studied based on international best practices, taking into account their impact on economic growth, social aspects, and the environmental situation in the country.
ADB experts recommended exploring opportunities to expand greenhouse gas trading (including carbon credits and offsets) at the global level, using advanced global standards when introducing ETS and a carbon tax in the future. Following the meeting, the parties agreed to continue and develop cooperation in these areas.
